Supported living homes FAQs

About supported living
What's the difference between SIL and STA homes?
SIL homes are where you live long term, with support for daily tasks. STA (short-term accommodation) is a short stay, often used for respite or to try living away from home.
Can I visit a home before I move in?
Yes. We'll arrange a visit so you can see the home and ask questions before you decide. If the current residents are happy to, you can meet them too.
What is SDA?
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is housing designed for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. If you're eligible, SDA funding in your NDIS plan pays for the home itself. The support you receive in the home, such as SIL, is funded separately.
Do I need SIL or SDA funding in my NDIS plan?
To live in an SDA home, you'll need SDA funding in your plan that matches the home's type and design category. Support in the home, such as SIL, is funded separately. To move into a SIL home, you'll usually need SIL funding in your plan. If you don't have the funding yet, we can talk you through how to ask the NDIA for it.
What does it cost?
Your NDIS plan pays for your support, and in an SDA home your SDA funding pays for the home itself. In an SDA home you also pay a reasonable rent contribution, worked out under NDIS rules from your pension and any Commonwealth Rent Assistance. In other homes you pay rent. Your personal living costs, such as food and bills, are separate. Before you decide, we'll explain every cost in writing and go through your accommodation and service agreements with you.
I can't see a home that suits me. What now?
